Celebrated as an American hero for his service in Vietnam, Milwaukee native George Banda has always been uncomfortable with any titles of honor. In a reflection of his humility for being awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star as an Army Medic, he says he was just doing the job our country trained him for. As the grandson of legal immigrants from Mexico, Banda understands the social perceptions of Latinos in his hometown, and the shared struggle with self-identity and pride at being an American who is ethnically Mexican.Read More

Video: From Iranian Revolution to 24-hour news cycleJul 21, 2017
In the immediate aftermath of
In the immediate aftermath of the fаtаl 2016 pоlіcе shооting of Phіlandо Castіle in a Minnesota suburb, there were heart-wrenching moments shared in the back of a pоlіcе car between Castіle’s girlfriend and her daughter.
The video released shows Dіamond Rеynolds with her four-year-old daughter. An emotional Rеynolds is heard shouting an expletive, and her daughter pleads with her to be quiet so that she won’t “get shооted.” Later, when Rеynolds says she wishes she could take her handcuffs off, her daughter again implores: “No, please don’t, I don’t want you to get shооted.”
These pain-filled words, “I Don’t Want You To Get Shооted”, of this four-year-old baby, is the theme for our Second Annual Black Lives Matter event at Alice’s Garden Urban Farm. Join us as we lift up community voices and concerns, as we all struggle to find our way through the, too-often, lack of justice and compassion in this nation for Black people.
