Audio: Youth learn trade skills at Westlawn sports complex build

YouthBuild is an alternative education program that provides job training and educational opportunities for at-risk youth ages 16 to 24.

Participants learn construction skills while constructing or rehabilitating affordable housing for low-income or homeless families in their own neighborhoods. Members of the Milwaukee YouthBuild program, coordinated by the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee, were invited to earn hands on construction training at the location of the $150,000 multi-sport complex in Milwaukee’s Westlawn Neighborhood.

These two audio interviews took place at that development site, with Tracey Underwood, a YouthBuild program member, and Evans Gant, the Section 3 Coordinator at Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee. Both offered their insight into the job training program, with each offering a unique perspective from their own personal career journey.
