U.S. citizenship for Native Americans has still not delivered equal access to the ballot after 100 years

Voter participation advocate Theresa Pasqual traverses the tribal community of Acoma Pueblo with a stack of sample ballots in her car and applications for absentee ballots, handing them out at every opportunity ahead of New Mexico’s June 4 primary. Residents of the pueblo’s original mesa-top “sky city” that endured after the Spanish invasion in the late 1500s know firsthand the challenges that Native American voters have faced across Indian Country, where polling places are often hours away and restrictive voter laws and ID requirements only add to the barriers. It has been a century now since an act of...

People of both Latino and AAPI heritage has doubled in 20 years yet the demographic remains ignored

The number of people of both Latino and Asian American or Pacific Islander heritage has more than doubled in the last 20 years yet it remains an often ignored demographic, researchers at UCLA said recently. The UCLA Latino Policy and Politics Institute analyzed Census Bureau data within the last two decades. This included the 2000 census count as well as American Community Survey 5-year estimates on population characteristics from 2010 and 2022. Their analysis indicated people in the United States who identify as Latino and Asian American or Pacific Islander, or “AAPI Latinos,” rose from 350,000 to 886,000 in...

Trump’s Big Lie 2.0: Why mainstream Republicans have embraced an era of political prosecution

As we remember and honor the sacrifice of American GIs who died at Normandy in the battle against fascism, it is vital to realize that the struggle against that evil form of government is once again before us. From November 2020 until last week we lived in the era of Trump Big Lie 1.0, his assertion that he had won an election he actually lost by over 7 million votes. Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul filed felony forgery charges Tuesday against two attorneys and an aide who helped submit paperwork falsely saying that former President Donald Trump had won the battleground state in 2020. The state charges are the first to come in Wisconsin and follow separate charges brought in Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, and Georgia related to the fake electors scheme. Democratic Governor Tony Evers offered a one-word response to news of the charges being filed: “Good.” The Wisconsin charges were filed against Trump’s attorney in the state, Jim Troupis, 62, attorney Kenneth Chesebro, 62, who was advising the...

Democrats hope for more legislative power in Wisconsin after gerrymandered GOP maps discarded

For the first time in more than a decade, Democrats in key battleground state Wisconsin have a chance at wresting some legislative control from Republicans thanks to new district maps from Governor Tony Evers. Republicans will likely retain their majority in the Senate in November’s elections. But redrawn districts coupled with retirements have left almost two-thirds of the Assembly’s seats open this election cycle, giving Democrats their best shot at taking control of that chamber in a generation. “It’s been too partisan for too long,” Senate Minority Leader Dianne Hesselbein said. “I know I’m sick of it and the...

Standing up to bullies: 80th Anniversary of D-Day haunted by fading memories and Europe’s new war

As young soldiers, they waded through breaking waves and gunfire to battle the Nazis. Now bent with age, the dwindling number of World War II veterans joined a new generation of leaders on June 6 to honor the dead, the living, and the fight for democracy on the shores where they landed 80 years ago on D-Day. The war in Ukraine shadowed the ceremonies in Normandy, a grim modern-day example of lives and cities that are again suffering through war in Europe. Ukraine’s president was greeted with a standing ovation and cheers. Russia, a crucial World War II ally...
