Milwaukee families gathered at the Discovery World Science and Technology Museum on January 5 for a special Kids’ Gala, as part of the 2019 Wisconsin Inauguration festivities for Governor-elect Tony Evers and Lt. Governor-elect Mandela Barnes.

Held in Appleton, Madison, and concluding in Milwaukee, Evers – a former teacher and Wisconsin superintendent of schools – wanted to share his passion for government with children in communities across the state. The three locations were selected to put the spotlight on children during the events scheduled to celebrate his January 7 inauguration.

“We have a moral and legal obligation to make sure these kids grow up to be good citizens,” said Governor-elect Evers. “One day they will vote, they will pay taxes, they will work, they will enjoy life as adults, and they will participate in our democracy. So we want to make sure they are prepared, because they are our future.”

The Kids’ Galas were design to bring people together, and reinforce the fact that education is important for Wisconsin’s youth. Discovery World’s former President and CEO, Joel Brennan, was appointed to serve as Secretary for the Department of Administration.

Activities for children during the event included face painting and crafts, along with a variety of scientific projects presented by Discovery World staff, and a performance by Davis Dancers of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, led by Cedric Gardner. Both Governor-elect Evers and Lt. Governor-elect Barnes spoke with Milwaukee’s youth and posed with them for selfies.

“Not only have I been an educator my entire adult life, I’m also a parent and a grandparent. I’ve always believed that what is best for our kids is what is best for our state.” Governor-elect Evers added. “Our Wisconsin is one where kids in every corner of the state can thrive, and where their bright futures are essential to our plans for changing the direction of our state for the better.”

The swearing-in ceremony for Governor and Lt. Governor, along with Attorney General-elect Josh Kaul, Treasurer-elect Sarah Godlewski, and Secretary of State Doug La Follette, takes place at 11:30 a.m. on January 7 in Madison.
