Promise Zone initiative to help revitalize neighborhoods

Common Council President Ashanti Hamilton and a team of organizers, working as agents of positive change in key areas of the City of Milwaukee, announced their Promise Zone revitalization plan on January 31. County Supervisors pass Safe Harbor resolution amid protest

The approved 16-738 Anti-Discrimination legislation included a reference to Milwaukee as a sanctuary, but did not seek to classify it as a sanctuary city. Milwaukee County Supervisors affirmed their opposition to all forms of discrimination on February 2 by adopting 12 to 7 a resolution that states a commitment to value all people equally, with the goal of keeping the county a “safe” place for immigrants. Basketball legend turned author and political activist Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will give a speech and take questions March 2 at the Milwaukee Theatre as the guest of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Distinguished Lecture Series and the Muslim Student Association. The Milwaukee Bucks is where Abdul-Jabbar began his professional basketball, when the second-year franchise picked him as the first overall choice in the 1969 NBA draft. State Senator Chris Larson and Representative Jonathan Brostoff were joined by a list of supporters in taking a stand against Islamophobia in Wisconsin on January 31.
