Use of ballot drop boxes will expand this fall after Wisconsin Supreme Court overturns 2022 ruling

The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled on July 5 that officials can place ballot drop boxes around their communities in this fall’s elections, overturning its own ruling two years ago limiting their use in the presidential swing state. The court limited the use of drop boxes in July 2022, ruling then that they could be placed only in local election clerks’ offices and no one other than the voter could return a ballot in person. Conservatives controlled the court at that time, but Janet Protasiewicz’s election victory in April 2023 flipped the court to liberal control. Seeing an opening, Priorities...

Not a democracy: The new America 2.0 envisioned by Republican’s Project 2025 is a feudalistic oligarchy

Kevin Roberts, who heads the Heritage Foundation and is largely responsible for Project 2025, just implicitly threatened Americans that if we do not allow him and his hard-right movement to complete their transformation of America from a democratic republic into an authoritarian state, there will be blood in the streets. “We’re in the process of taking this country back,” he told a TV audience, adding, “The reason that they are apoplectic right now, the reason that so many anchors on MSNBC, for example, are losing their minds daily is because our side is winning. And so I come full...

Donald J. Trump v. United States: SCOTUS ruling overthrows central premise of American democracy

“This nation was founded on the principle that there are no kings in America. Each of us is equal before the law. No one — no one — is above the law, not even the president of the United States.” – President Joe Biden The United States Supreme Court on July 1, 2024 overthrew the central premise of American democracy: that no one is above the law. It decided that the president of the United States, possibly the most powerful person on earth, has “absolute immunity” from criminal prosecution for crimes committed as part of the official acts at...

U.S. Supreme Court’s immunity decision would make Trump an Imperial President above the law if re-elected

They did it. The Supreme Court handed a massive victory to Donald Trump in this so-called “immunity” case, and it will probably take a year or more before there is even a chance he will be held to trial for trying to overthrow the 2020 election and, thus, the government of the United States. As feared, the six Republicans on the Court essentially threw Trump’s sedition case back to the lower court (with caveats) where there will be numerous decisions to make — which are all further appealable, resetting the case so Trump can drag things out for another...

Members of U.S. “Ghost Army” who deceived Nazis with covert ploys in WWII given overdue honors

With inflatable tanks, radio trickery, costume uniforms, and acting, the American military units that became known as the Ghost Army outwitted the enemy during World War II. Their mission was kept secret for decades, but the group stepped out of the shadows in March as they were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal at a ceremony in Washington. “The actions of the Ghost Army helped change the course of the war for thousands of American and Allied troops and contributed to the liberation of a continent from a terrible evil,” Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth said during the ceremony...

Western mediators warn Iranian-backed factions in Lebanon to back off from a wider Mideast war

U.S., European, and Arab mediators are pressing to keep stepped-up cross-border attacks between Israel and Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah militants from spiraling into a wider Middle East war that the world has feared for months. Iran and Israel traded threats on June 29 of what Iran said would be an “obliterating” war over Hezbollah. Hopes are lagging for a cease-fire in Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza that would calm attacks by Hezbollah and other Iranian-allied militias. With the stalled talks in mind, American and European diplomats and other officials are delivering warnings to Hezbollah — which is far stronger...
