Alderwoman Chantia Lewis: Standing together on 9/11

Statement from Alderman Chantia Lewis on September 11, 2017

Today is an emotional day for our nation and for me personally, as I was an active member of the United States Air Force when the attacks on September 11 took place. I have a deep and first-hand understanding of the way our nation changed following those tragic events.

In delivering the Pledge of Allegiance during Milwaukee’s 9/11 memorial, I was reminded of the great loss we faced after the brutal attacks on our country on September 11, 2001, and the tremendous sacrifice that followed as we sent our loved ones to war. To all those who were lost or injured during and after the attacks, and to their loved ones who sacrificed and endured – we remember you today and we honor your memory and courage.

Our nation is faced with another pain, the painful loss of life, property, and homes after the recent hurricanes devastated cities across our nation. My own family is in the path of the storm, as I imagine so many other people have loved ones that are impacted.

As a great city and a great nation we can stand together on this sobering day, not only to remember the attack 16 years ago, but also to aid the victims of our latest hurricane disasters. I call to all of our citizens to stop and remember today, and if you can, offer help to your neighbors near or far. After all, in seeing our nation’s flag today, I am reminded that in moments of tragedy, our country and city unite to overcome adversity.
