Milwaukee Arts organizations share $227K in grants from City’s art board

The City of Milwaukee Arts Board (MAB) recently approved $227,500 in grants, ranging from $3,500 to $7,000, to be awarded between 35 local nonprofit arts organizations. At its May meeting, the MAB considered the recommendations of a seven-member citizen review panel and approved the grants, which require a dollar-for-dollar cash match from other sources. Residents join to make Harambee neighborhood healthier in massive 160 block cleanup

Volunteers and community leaders are came together on May 19 for an inaugural cleanup of 160 city blocks within the Harambee neighborhood in Milwaukee. It was the first community cleanup of this magnitude in Harambee, and organizers coordinated their resources to put hundreds of area volunteers in place for the event. The Inaugural Harambee Community Cleanup focused on the neighborhood from North Holton Street west to Interstate 43 and West North Avenue north to West Capitol Drive. County considers putting donation boxes at Mitchell Airport to help fight homelessness

A proposal that would allow donations to be collected at General Mitchell International Airport (GMIA) to aid in Milwaukee County’s fight against homelessness received unanimous support from a County Board committee on May 14. The measure would modify ordinance language that prevents solicitation near security checkpoints at Mitchell Airport. MATC offers free tuition with launch of “Promise for Adults” program

The Milwaukee Area Technical College officially launched the “MATC Promise for Adults” on May 17, offering free tuition for eligible students to finish their associate degrees at MATC. The new program is an expansion of MATC’s first-in-the-state Promise program, which assists new high school graduates. New water taxi service starts on the Milwaukee River

Milwaukee will finally get a riverfront taxi service starting May 19, utilizing the waterways that were used as the city’s original transit network. Milwaukee’s Water Taxi service will start operation on the Milwaukee River and its connecting outlets. Water Taxi MKE will provide rides by boat from river bars, public docks, and apartments on the water.
