Politics have poisoned the 2020 Census with fear so hard-to-count groups can go undercounted

Nearly one in four blacks, young people, and lower-income people, and one in five Hispanics, are uncertain or reluctant to participate in the 2020 Census. If that does not change, it could have a truly negative impact on the most vulnerable. As the 2020 U.S. census approaches, Americans overwhelmingly are aware of it, and more than eight-in-ten (84%) say they definitely or probably will participate, a new Pew Research Center survey finds. Still, 16% express at least some uncertainty about responding, with higher shares saying this among some demographic groups. Black and Hispanic adults, as well as those with...

Even Halloween in Milwaukee highlights the deep racial and economic divides

John F. Muller writes and studies philosophy in Wisconsin. He was formerly a lecturer at Harvard Law School and an attorney in Los Angeles. Conservative group seeks to make a quarter-million Wisconsin residents ineligible to vote

More than a quarter-million voters in Wisconsin identified as having moved could be made ineligible to vote before next year’s presidential primary election if a complaint filed on October 16 by a conservative law firm is successful. The Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty argues that the state Elections Commission broke the law when it decided to wait up to two years, rather than 30 days, to make ineligible voters who may have moved. The complaint asks for that decision to be immediately revoked, which could lead to as many as 234,000 voters losing their eligibility until they can...

Owner Nick Ginster said the tariffs have significantly hit the Riverwest business. “On a bicycle prior to the tariff increase, you’re paying 5.5%-11% duty on any incoming product out of Asia. Now, those same bicycles coming...
