Due to the pandemic this year, Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) will recognize seniors with a weeklong celebration of virtual graduation ceremonies beginning June 1.

Graduates and their families will be able to watch their school’s class president, valedictorian, salutatorian, commencement speakers, and principal, and view photos of their classmates during the full-length virtual programs.

“We salute the class of 2020 for handling this unexpected situation with maturity and responsibility in a safe manner,” said Dr. Keith P. Posley, Superintendent of MPS. “We are proud of the entire MPS class of 2020 and their families.”

Graduations will be released on the MPS YouTube page according to the the posted schedule. All virtual graduation ceremonies will be available for download as a keepsake for seniors and their families. All graduates will also receive, by mail, a complete printed program that recognizes every graduate.

Schools have already distributed caps and gowns, diploma covers, and yard signs. The pubic is encouraged to help celebrate the event and send your congratulations to all the seniors by sharing a creative photo, message, or video honoring local 2020 graduates by posting on social media with the tags #MPSClass2020, #MPSProud, or #MPSGrads.

The Milwaukee Independent began reporting on what was then referred to as the mysterious “Wuhan Virus” in January 2020. Other local media did not picked-up on the story until many weeks later. Our early features focused on the economic impact, social issues, and health concerns long before other Milwaukee news organizations even mentioned the coronavirus. Over the following year, we have published hundreds of articles about the pandemic and how it has affected the lives of Milwaukee residents. This extensive body of work can be found on our COVID-19 Special Report page, a chronological index of links by month. Our editorial voice remains dedicated to informing the public about this health crisis for as long as it persists.
