Lack of support for military families adds mental health struggles on top of the pandemic crisis

Aleha Landry, the wife of an airman in Colorado told me, “When he first came home, it was tough.” She was describing her family’s life since her husband, who lives with chronic depression, completed a partial hospitalization program and, in March, along with other members of his unit, entered a pandemic lockdown. He was now spending full days at home with her and their four children, which offered needed family time and rest from the daily rigors of training. Yet the military’s pandemic lockdown had its challenges as well. Aside from weekly online sessions with his therapist – the...

Study shows Wisconsin’s April 7 in-person election resulted in explosion of new COVID-19 infections

A new study published on May 18 showed a strong correlation between the April 7 in-person primary election in Wisconsin and an increase in coronavirus infections in the state, bolstering calls for a robust national vote-by-mail system for November. Researchers at University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Ball State University found clear spikes in cases in counties that had the most in-person voting locations on April 7, and found that far fewer new cases were confirmed in counties with widespread absentee ballot voting. Though public health experts had urged against holding the election due to the risks, the in-person voting was...

An Economic Civil War: Age-old racial wounds are exposed in effort to relax COVID-19 protections

With unemployment approaching Great Depression levels, the nation is waving the white flag on controlling the coronavirus. It appears not to shock the senses at the White House or at many governors’ mansions around the country that the 76,000 deaths from COVID-19 in three months could fill the Superdome with coffins. Instead, these leaders are pushing to “open up America” as much as they can for commerce. Following the lead of the Trump administration, governors tell us we cannot let the cost of the lockdown become worse than the disease. But scientists are already raising their death estimates by...

New simulation projects a massive loss of American lives if “Reopen” fanatics have their way

Roughly 1,264,000 US soldiers have died in all the wars this country has ever fought. A new simulation by the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School predicts that if all the states completely reopened today and all Americans ceased all social distancing measures, a million people would die in this country by June 30. That is, almost as many would die in the next two months as soldiers died in all of US wars in all of US history. That is the outcome being demanded by the “reopen” protesters who menaced Michigan’s state capitol with confederate flags, Nazi paraphernalia, and...

Demand for national vote-by-mail program fueled by infections related to Wisconsin’s election

The increasing number of COVID-19 cases among people who voted in-person for Wisconsin’s April 7 election is fueling demands for Congress to help fund the implementation of expanded vote-by-mail provisions in every state for the rest of this year, particularly for the nation’s general election scheduled for November. Wisconsin’s Republican legislative leaders and state Supreme Court were roundly criticized for ignoring the advice of public health officials and moving forward with in-person voting on April 7—while other states delayed their elections—as well as for quashing last-minute efforts of Democratic Gov. Tony Evers to address the safety concerns about polling...

Titans of Capitalism reap profits amid pandemic while working people make sacrifices for the common good

When I was a child, I heard my parents say that when we save our money it works for us. I remember having to dress up in my church clothes when I went to the bank to deposit my birthday checks or money I saved from my allowances. These ideas that banks and Wall Street are secular versions of church, and that money works for everyone are deeply at play in our society today. In the name of protecting the common good, Governors across the country have ordered people to stay at home, and all non-essential worksites shuttered. But...
