The latest push by Visa to hand off your credit card to artificial intelligence isn’t innovation. It’s exploitation.
Under the banner of “convenience,” the company has partnered with several major AI firms to allow so-called “agents,” not real people, to make purchases on your behalf. This is not voice-to-text. This is not a calendar reminder. This is generative AI given open access to consumer credit with the authority to make purchases.
This model is being sold to the public as a way to automate simple purchases like groceries, travel bookings, and holiday gifts. It is based on the flawed premise that machines can now “shop for you.”
But nothing about this partnership serves the average consumer, who scrutinizes their purchases based on lifelong shopping habits. It is a full-scale transfer of spending power from human decision-making to algorithmic automation, tied directly into the most predatory and unregulated aspects of the financial system.
It is designed, built, and deployed for profit, not for people.
There is no consumer problem this technology solves that could not be addressed with better wages, lower prices, or fairer credit terms. Instead, it invents a new dependency: letting machines shop with your money, through systems engineered by the same companies that already profit from impulse buys, data harvesting, and transactional fees.
Visa’s pitch is not a public service. It is a framework for turning every person with a credit line into a passive economic unit.
The scale of harm this introduces is enormous. Most Americans are already navigating a financial system where wages stagnate while debt climbs. The average credit card balance now exceeds $6,000 per household.
At the same time, the AI industry is still scrambling to define guardrails for its products, with frequent hallucinations, errors, and untraceable sourcing. Now these two systems, the fragile tech sector and the extractive credit infrastructure, are being merged with no clear accountability.
There is no public demand for this. No working family asked for their grocery list to be handed over to a chatbot. No consumer asked for their bank account to be routed through AI logic. This is a supply-driven solution to a fictional inconvenience.
It was created purely to normalize the idea that financial automation is empowerment, when it can only put the economic stability of American families at risk.
According to Visa, it says that the AI agents it developed are not just “making recommendations.” They are designed to execute transactions. That means your financial behavior is no longer a matter of deliberate choice. It becomes a function of predictive analytics, historical purchases, and inferred preferences, all processed through black-box systems owned and monetized by private firms.
Visa and its partners claim users will have control, like setting budgets, reviewing purchases, and approving transactions. But that control is an illusion. Once the infrastructure is in place, companies will do everything they can to push for full autonomy. A prompt that starts with “find me a flight” will quickly evolve into “book anything under $1,500,” and then “just get it done.”
This creep is not hypothetical. It is foundational to how tech products evolve: normalize the handoff, then expand the permissions.
Even if limits are respected in theory, the margin of error in practice is unacceptable. AI models are not perfect systems. They guess. They hallucinate. They misinterpret input. And when that input is your money, your data, and your financial identity, there is no acceptable rate of failure.
Visa may claim that disputes will be honored and fraud will be mitigated, but there is no technical pathway for shared liability between an AI agent, a bank, and a card network when something goes wrong. Blame will default to the user, the same way it always has in digital finance.
Meanwhile, AI companies stand to benefit enormously. By plugging into Visa’s infrastructure, they gain access to massive streams of behavioral and transactional data. With user “consent,” agents can study past purchases, detect patterns, and generate hyper-personalized buying decisions.
What this enables is not smart assistance. It enables deeper targeting, stronger manipulation, and the erosion of impulse control. AI can now exploit the same techniques used in digital advertising. Only now it can act on them instantly with your money.
This is surveillance capitalism with a transaction engine built in. It’s not about freedom, it’s about frictionless monetization of your habits, preferences, and weaknesses. It replaces deliberation with delegation. In doing so, it builds a world where opting out is impossible, and opting in is irreversible.
The companies behind this system know exactly what they are doing. Visa, Stripe, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Perplexity aren’t building tools to ease consumer burdens, they are engineering a financial system that reduces consumer friction only insofar as it improves throughput and profitability.
Strip away the marketing language, and what remains is a network of private corporations installing automation directly between your wallet and the market, with no meaningful oversight and no incentive to protect your long-term welfare.
The most dangerous part isn’t even the purchases themselves. It’s the normalization of AI as a financial actor. A delegator of risk, an enabler of debt, and a suppressor of individual decision-making.
As consumers are conditioned to accept machine spending as routine, the boundaries between intentional and automated consumption will blur. When the consequences of a transaction arrive in the form of overdraft, late fees, and interest hikes, the system will push those burdens right back onto the user, regardless of who initiated the purchase.
And don’t expect regulation to catch up. The same forces that have allowed the tech sector to operate with near-impunity for two decades are at work here: rapid rollout, user excitement, a lobbying apparatus trained to frame corporate interests as innovation, and a government weakened by political fragmentation and private-sector capture.
Under Trump, financial oversight has further eroded. Consumer protection agencies are underfunded, enforcement is weakened, and industry voices are louder than public advocates.
It’s not a coincidence that this system is launching during a period of extreme economic stress. When wages are suppressed, costs are up, and more Americans are leaning on credit to get by. Introducing AI-driven spending seems less like progress and more like a racket by organized crime.
There is no relief here, only acceleration of existing pressures. When people are exhausted, overwhelmed, and juggling three jobs, they are more likely to surrender decision-making. The AI doesn’t relieve them. It exploits their fatigue.
This is the same playbook used across the fintech and e-commerce landscape: introduce a feature that claims to save time or money, and design it so that the default behavior benefits the platform, not the user.
Buy Now, Pay Later was pitched as a budgeting tool. It turned into a debt trap for millions. Personalized ads were framed as a convenience. They became a surveillance regime. Now, AI spending agents are being pitched as a personal assistant. They are nothing of the kind. They are extensions of the companies that build them, and those companies are measured by quarterly earnings, not social outcomes.
If Visa truly cared about easing the consumer experience, it could advocate for interest-free grace periods, simplified dispute resolution, or greater transparency in billing for its existing financial products.
If OpenAI or Perplexity were committed to ethical deployment, they would be building tools that empower user discretion, not automate away responsibility. But none of that generates the return on investment these companies seek.
Their value lies in volume, and the more financial activity they can automate, the more data they capture, the more spending they facilitate, the more control they assert over the mechanics of daily life.
There is no reason to believe that these agents will remain assistants. They will become default interfaces. Just as browsers became portals to the web, these agents will be gateways to the marketplace, embedded not only in devices but in habits.
People will stop clicking “approve” and start trusting the system. Once trust is built, it will be monetized. Once habits are formed, they will be exploited. And once harm is done, it will be blamed on the user.
This isn’t science fiction. It’s a live pilot program. It begins with grocery shopping and ends with complete financial mediation.
The people who will suffer most aren’t early adopters with disposable income. They are the elderly who still think junk mail is a personal correspondence, the disabled, the low-income, and the digitally unskilled.
These are the same groups already being squeezed by rising interest rates, inflation, and the economic degradation of the Trump era. Now they’re being offered a new kind of burden, framed as assistance.
The truth is that AI spending agents aren’t designed to serve consumers. They are designed to take advantage of them. The faster that process becomes, the less room there is for human thought, pause, or protection.
And when artificial intelligence serves profit alone, it stops being a tool of innovation and becomes a system for amplifying harm.
