A Midwest Rivalry: Chicago to host 2024 DNC in political competition of Milwaukee’s 2024 RNC

Democrats announced on April 11 that they will hold their party’s 2024 national convention in Chicago, choosing the biggest liberal city in the Midwest as they try to keep the momentum going after a strong midterm election performance in the key battleground region. Organizers from Chicago, Atlanta, and New York spent months lobbying to be the site of the convention, but the final decision lay with President Joe Biden, who is expected to formally launch his reelection campaign in the coming weeks. “Chicago is a great choice,” Biden, who was flying to Northern Ireland, said in a statement. “Democrats...

White House review of deadly U.S. withdrawal from Afghan in 2021 places blame on Trump’s Taliban deal

President Joe Biden’s administration on April 6 laid the blame on his predecessor, President Donald Trump, for the deadly and chaotic 2021 withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan that brought about some of the darkest moments of Biden’s presidency. The White House publicly released a 12-page summary of the results of the so-called “hotwash” of U.S. policies around the ending of the nation’s longest war, taking little responsibility for its own actions and asserting that Biden was “severely constrained” by Trump’s decisions. It does acknowledge that the evacuation of Americans and allies from Afghanistan should have started sooner, but...

Anonymous survey finds drastic increase of reported sexual assaults at U.S. military academies

Reported sexual assaults at U.S. military academies shot up during the 2021-22 school year, and one in five female students told an anonymous survey that they had experienced unwanted sexual contact. A Pentagon report on reported assaults at the Army, Navy and Air Force academies shows an overall 18% jump in assaults reported by students compared with the previous year. The increase was driven largely by the Navy, which had nearly double the number of reported assaults in 2022, compared with 2021. It is unclear whether the phasing out of COVID-19-related restrictions contributed to the increase, including at the...

Recruiting Challenges: Why the U.S. Army is struggling to meet its high school enlistment goals

Army recruiters struggling to meet enlistment goals say one of their biggest hurdles is getting into high schools, where they can meet students one on one. But they received a recent boost from a recruiting advocate whom school leaders could not turn away: the secretary of the Army. During three days of back-to-back meetings across Chicago last month, Army Secretary Christine Wormuth spoke with students, school leaders, college heads, recruiters and an array of young people involved in ROTC or junior ROTC programs. Again and again, she asked, what can the Army do to better reach young people and...

Study finds Americans think national news outlets do not care about impact of their reporting on society

Half of Americans in a recent survey indicated they believe national news organizations intend to mislead, misinform or persuade the public to adopt a particular point of view through their reporting. The survey, released on February 15 by Gallup and the Knight Foundation, goes beyond others that have shown a low level of trust in the media to the startling point where many believe there is an intent to deceive. Asked whether they agreed with the statement that national news organizations do not intend to mislead, 50% said they disagreed. Only 25% agreed, the study found. Similarly, 52% disagreed...

Organization of Russian journalists suspended from IFJ over invasion coverage of Ukraine

The International Federation of Journalists has suspended the Russian Union of Journalists on February 22 over its action since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its role in annexed Ukrainian territories.
